How to start a blog?
Your blog topic is the base of your blog. Mostly known as a niche. You have to choose the right topic at the first place. People search the internet to solve their problems, find information, be entertained so your topic should attract such a readers.
You have to choose the topic which makes you happy while writing about it. If you choose the topic which is uninterested for the sake of being popular, you won’t get success with it.
Here are the steps to choose the topic you passionate about:
Write all the ideas coming into your mind on paper or in a note taking app. Put everything coming out of your mind.
Ask these below questions & to come up with more blog ideas:
- What can I teach others?
- What are things in which I have knowledge?
- How do I spend my free time?
- What are things I love to learn & read?
- What are my hobbies?
- What is the one thing I could do without resting in my life?
These questions will help you to brainstorm blogging ideas.
You might have ended up with the huge list of ideas. So How to finalize the topic?
Ask these four questions:
- Am I interested in this topic?
- Am I expert in this topic? If not, Should I have a desire to get expertise?
- Is this blog topic popular?
- Would people buy the products & services relevant to this topic?
If you don’t know the popularity of the topic, use Google Trends to see the popularity of topic over time.
If your answers to these question are positive, then you have chosen the right topic. Most of the people choose the niche in which they have earned professionalism so that they could offer services.
If you have figured out the topic for your blog, Let’s move to the next important step.
Here are two important steps you need to follow. You have to buy a domain name & Web hosting for your blog. You can buy it from Bluehost. It is a great web hosting service powering thousands of websites.
C is a imperative step because people will remember you with your blog name in the future once it gains popularity. It will stand as a brand for everyone so choose your domain name carefully.
Web hosting will make your website online. In fact, you store the web pages on the web hosting server & web host makes it accessible online by your domain name.
One of the popular web hosting services I would recommend to everyone is Bluehost web hosting. I am using this web hosting & I have a good experience with their services.
Moreover, it is recommended by world’s most popular blogging platform WordPress.
Here are few tips on choosing domain name:
- Choose .com over other domain extensions. It is very popular domain extension & people remember it easily.
- It should be memorable & catchy.
- Keep it short, Do not add hyphens & numbers.
- The domain name should convey some meaning which will be directly or indirectly related to the blog niche.
Use the tool below to find your right domain name. I have created this tool especially for you. It will tell you whether a domain is available or not.
If you are not able to see the tool, you can access it from https://dmarketer.com/domain-availability-checker/
If the domain is available, you are lucky. If it isn’t, search until you get your right domain name. You will receive free domain name with the Bluehost hosting.
Just click on the link available in the tool. (Link will appear only if your domain is available). Check the spelling of domain name before clicking on a link.
It’s time to buy a web hosting. After clicking on the link available in the tool, you will be redirected to below page:
Fill out the account information such as First Name, Last Name, Country, Email address, etc. Scroll down & you will see Package Information:
Choose your account plan as Basic 12 Month. Uncheck all the options like Search Engine Jumpstart, SiteLock Security, Comodo PositiveSSL Bundle.
Domain Privacy Protection option can be checked depending upon your choice. Anyone can use whois registry to check information of any domain. People could get information such as domain owner, address, mobile number, etc.
If you don’t want to expose your information then simply do check Domain Privacy Protection option.
Check the final total before making payment. Scroll down, and you will see payment information:
Enter your credit card information, agree with the terms & conditions & click on submit. You can also use Paypal to make payment, click on “more payment options” to make PayPal payment.
After successful payment, you will be redirected to the below page:
Bluehost may try to sell more related services (Cross-Sell in marketing term), but you don’t need to buy any extra services at initial stage so click on “no thanks” link. You will be redirected to purchase confirmation page:
Click on the “create your password” button & set up your password on the next screen.
Enter the strong password or click on “Suggest Password”. Copy the suggested password and keep it safe. I use LasPass to manage all my passwords.
Click on the “next” button & Bluehost will create a brand new hosting account for you.
After a few seconds, you’ll see below screen.
Click on the “log in” button, and you will be presented with your awesome web hosting dashboard:
Meanwhile, you will receive account activation email. Click on the “Verify Your Email” button to activate your account.
Congratulations! You have just completed the most important step of a blog creation.
WordPress is a popular content management system (CMS). It powers 27.9% of the internet. There are plenty of CMS in the market.
- Weebly etc.
But WordPress beats them all in popularity & usage. It is free to use the system, and you can add more power to it by adding plugins. (Don’t get confused with the plugins, I will cover it later.)
So let’s start the WordPress Installation:
In your Bluehost dashboard, find out the website section & click on the “Install WordPress” icon.
Bluehost uses Mojo to install WordPress. Click on the “Continue Installation” button.
On the next screen choose your preferred domain. You have two options. www.yourdomain.com & yourdomain.com I always prefer to use yourdomain.com
Click on the “Next” button:
In this step, you have to fill out admin information form. Enter your website title, username, email address and password on the next screen.
Bluehost will install WordPress for you. Just watch the progress on the next screen.
If you get “Installation Successful” message, then you have installed WordPress. Ignore the “Overall Site Progress” message.
Now, Do log into your site by going http://yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
Enter your email address & password then hit “Log In” button.
After logging in, Click on “Plugins” & Deactivate all the plugins. At this stage, we are not going to use any plugin.
After deactivating all the plugins, Delete these three plugins:
- Hello Dolly
- Jetpack by WordPress.com
- MOJO Marketplace
Deletion of these three plugins will make your WordPress installation clean. (Remove unnecessary things.)
Do not delete Akismet Anti-Spam plugin. It is a must-have plugin; I am going to discuss later.
You might be wondering what this Genesis Framework is?
I’ve seen a lot of theme development frameworks, but Genesis stands out of all. I am using Genesis Framework for all of my websites.
It is the robust and yet simple framework by StudioPress. It speeds up the development by reducing theme development time.
If you are somber about SEO of your blog, I recommend using theme developed under this framework.
- It is SEO Optimized & Google friendly. It is built on great SEO standards. (My favorite.)
- It delivers responsive designs.
- You can update your website without losing customizations.
- It is developed & backed by dedicated team of developers, so it is always up to date.

Structured data of my blog post How to Build Links:

If you want to use a free theme, you can go to your website dashboard. Click on Appearance–>Add New

Hover on the theme you like and click on “Install” button. You can also see a theme preview before installation.
Once you install the theme, click on “Activate” button and see your website by entering the address in the browser.
Please note that Free themes are not SEO optimized & Secure.
Visit Genesis Framework by Studiopress & Click on “Buy Genesis Framework“. It will cost you one-time fee of $59.95
On the next screen, Create StudioPress account by entering Name, Email & Password. Complete the purchase with your Credit Card or Paypal account.
Do log into your StudioPress account & Download the both Genesis Framework & Genesis Sample theme.
You have successfully downloaded the Genesis Framework and Theme. Go to your website dashboard, Click on Appearance–>Add New–> Upload theme.

Visit your website and see How it looks?
I know it looks so simple because it is a Genesis Sample theme. I am using Genesis Sample theme for my website; I have customized look & feel.

You can also modify the genesis sample theme yourself, but it requires some learning curve. If you don’t know how to edit the theme, you can hire a developer & designer from UpWork.
SSL certificate makes your website secure. Search engines may give ranking bump if you are using SSL certificate for your website.
If you install SSL certificate your website URL, http://yourwebsite.com becomes https://yourwebsite.com
Bluehost has already installed free SSL certificate for three months. Later, you will be charged $4.17 per month.
You can easily access your website by entering HTTPS URL that is https://yourwebsite.com, but you have to follow below two steps to make your website HTTPS SEO Optimized:
You have to change your WordPress Address & Site Address so that site visitors can access your website over HTTPS protocol. It will also help you to access WordPress dashboard over HTTPS protocol.
It will also help you to access WordPress dashboard over HTTPS protocol.
Go to Setting of your WordPress dashboard and change both the WordPress and Site Address:
After making this change, You may require doing login into your WordPress dashboard.
You can access your website using both HTTP & HTTPS protocols, and it doesn’t create any problems for humans because they just have to access your website.
The problems arise in search engines. Search engines will treat your website as two copies one with http://yourwebsite.com and https://www.yourwebsite.com
It means duplicate contents, and the Google algorithms like Panda will penalize your website for having duplicate contents.
The simple solution is just to add the below code to your .htacess file.
This code will 301 permanent redirect your all versions of the URLs to https://yourwebsite.com & search engines will consider only one copy of your website which is https://yourwebsite.com
Copy the below code & Replace “yourwebsite.com” with your domain:
Go to your Bluehost account dasboard and find “files” section & click on “File Manager”
A pop-up box will open, Select the domain & click on the checkbox with option “Show hidden files.”
The new window will be opened. It is the file manager for your website:
- Click on the “public_html” from the left panel.
- Select “.htaccess” file from right section.
- Click on “Edit” option.
Paste the code at the top of the file. Don’t forget to replace “yourwebsite.com” with your domain.
Check If your website is properly redirecting by entering the URL with https in the browser. If you are getting any error, Let me know in the comments.
Once you have a theme set up, do some customization to your website.
Permalinks are nothing but the URLs of your blog post. Go to Setting–>Permalinks from your dashboard & click on “Post name” radio button.
If “Post name” option is already set, then no need to anything here.
This is SEO friendly URL structure. If you have such permalink structure, Search engines don’t face any difficulties while crawling your web pages.
Tagline appears below the title of your website. You can either change it or delete it completely.
Go to Setting–>General and change or delete the tagline.
If “Search Engine Visibility” option is checked, then search engines may not index your website. Go to Setting–>Reading & uncheck the option, If it is already checked.
If your use theme customizer, you can do a lot of changes without the help of any developer.
Go to Appearance–>Customize and check out the available options.
These options are different according to the theme. I am using Genesis Sample theme, so I have these varieties of options to customize.

Finally, Click on Save changes.
You just prevented your website from creating a lot of duplicate contents. You have also optimized SEO of your website.
The last step in Yoast SEO plugin configuration is XML Sitemaps
- Click on XML Sitemaps from SEO menu.
- Go to Taxonomies tab.
- Click on Not in sitemap for both Categories and Tags. We don’t need Category & Tag URLs in the sitemap because we have assigned noindex value of Meta robots.
- Click on Save changes button.
Go to General tab and click on XML Sitemap link (open in the new tab) to see your sitemap. If your sitemap is not working, then you should check the common sitemap errors post from Yoast SEO.

Your blog should generate enough traffic to earn a decent income.
Do not rely on one strategy to monetize your blog, use more than one strategies effectively & try to figure out which strategy is giving you more returns.
Here are 10 ways to make money online with blogging:
Google Adsense is a publisher network of Google. It is the best ad network which provides highest paying ads.
A publisher could make a lot of revenue with Google Adsense. You can also use media.net as Google Adsense alternative.
You have to place the ad code on your website. Mostly bloggers place the ads at sidebar and header.
Ads are displayed to your website visitor & when site visitor click on the ad, you will get money in your account. Later you can withdraw the money in your bank account.
A major problem with advertising networks is your income depend on your blogging niche. Some of the highest paying niches are Health, Insurance, Lawyer, Technology etc.
The rise of the use of Adblocking Extension is another problem. Ad blocking extension prevents ads from loading.
According to PageFair, 615 million devices are using Adblock extension & 11% of the global internet population is blocking ad on the web:
So I don’t recommend you to use Google Adsense but If you want to give it a try follow this guide from ProBlogSchool.
Once your website starts to receive high traffic flood, you can sell ad space. It is one type of a Native Advertising.
26% more consumers were measured to look at native ad placements more than standard banners.
You can sell your ad space depending upon 4 factors:
Impressions are nothing but the views. You can set ad space cost per 1000 impressions also known as CPM (Cost Per Milli).
If you set CPM price to $2 & If advertisers ad gets 20000 page views then you will be paid (20000 page views/1000 x $2) = $40
When your website visitors click on advertiser’s ad, you will get paid. This method is also known as CPC (Cost Per Click).
When your website visitors purchase the product of the advertiser by clicking on the ad you will get some percentage of commission out of the cost of the product. This method is also known as CPA (Cost Per Action)
This very simple tactic. You can place the ad for specific days and charge the advertiser based on the number of days.
So, How can you set this CPM, CPC, CPA prices? One simple trick is approaching the website which is in your niche and asks How much will you charge If I want to place an ad on your website & Why?
You could find useful plugins to place the ads on your website here.
I like Ads by datafeedr.com plugin. It is useful for Impression & Day based advertising.
Install the plugin and If you are using any adblocker extension, disable it for the plugin to work.
Create the Ad Group and Ads. Set Start and End Date. You can also set Impressions.
Go to Setting->Ads and Enable shortcodes in text widgets. Later generate the shortcode and add it where you want to display the ads.
BuySellAds.com is also a great website to sell ad space but the ads placed via this site will be blocked by Adblock Extension.
Here few tips on selling ad space:
- Place appropriate & relevant ads to your content.
- Define some rules for placing the ads.
- Don’t place the ads from untrusted advertisers. If possible, use the product before placing ads.
- Place the ads which are not from your competitors.
- While naming the ad banners, do not add words like “ad”, “advertise”, “advertising”, etc otherwise, adblocker extensions will block your ads. It will be good if you check whether the ad is displaying or not while Adblock extension activated.
- Do not add a lot of ad spaces on your page.

There are a lot of bloggers who are making thousands of dollars by selling video courses. Melyssa Griffin earns six figure income by selling online video courses:
Make video courses require a few types of equipment like Video Cam, Mic, Video Editing Software, etc. but it gives a higher return on investments.
You should come up with the solid idea which solves the problem of your target audience. You should have a higher level of expertise & good mindset in making video courses.
You can use a video camera like Canon EOS 70d to produce videos. If your course includes screen recording, then you can use screen recorder software like Screenflow for Mac & Camtasia for Windows. Rode VideoMic is best to record videos.
You can hire the person for Video Editing or use the Final Cut Pro by Apple to edit the videos yourself.
Create the structure/outline of your entire course and create the videos. At the first place, you might think you are not doing it well, but believe in yourself and create the entire course.
Once you create the course you can create the page explaining your video course.
I suggest you use any of these three video course hosting services:
You will get a link after hosting your video course on these platforms. You can add that link to your video course explanation page.
